She's a Sea Scamp Marblehead She's a real pleasure to sail giving a good turn of speed with some nifty acceleration! She handles well in all conditions and is beautifully balanced but is rather susceptible to entanglement from the dreaded weed due to having a deep keel (17 inch approx.). Shamrock shares the same maker, and hull design as 'Mustard' (owned by my Father). Both boats are evenly matched which makes for some interesting competition! For a kit model it is easy to build and control. Prefers light to medium winds, tends to broach in a gust. If conditions get heavy or gusty with wind shift a good winch is essential and the trick is to play the winch for performance. A new Marblehead named Mustard, scamp design, built by Squire Kay. She really sails well. This is a Robbe 'Topcat' catamaran that was launched in 1991 but is now discontinued. She is 50" long and carries a substantial sail area. She has incredible acceleration and is extremely fast and responsive but suffers like all cats when turning, gybing being the preferred method. I have made many alterations to the original plan adding independent sail control and a true centre board. The original design has a swinging self righting keel- but this destabilized the boat and created too much drag. She may now capsize and turn turtle, but the overall sailing experience has been enhanced. I am at the moment working on an idea for sliding ballast to emulate the movement of a crew- this should improve performance when sailed on one hull and will hopefully lead to higher speeds!
